The
Great Train Robbery is a 1903 American silent short Western film written,
produced, and directed by Edwin S. Porter, a former Edison Studios cameraman.
In this film it is clear to see that there was no editing done and also there
was no jump cuts used because of the fact that in those times they didn’t have
the right equipment to edit there films and also they didn’t know how to. Also
it had no narrative and you only hear music they use body language to show the
audience what was going on instead of using a narrative. The use of continuity
editing is used throughout the great train robbery the purpose for using this
is to direct the viewers’ attention to pre-existing consistency of story across
both physical location. Also it is used to maintain continuous and clear
narrative action by following a set of rules.it gives the narrative a structure
and it makes it easier to watch the film it also makes the shot sequence flow
seamlessly into each other. The person who edited ‘’the great train robbery’’
looked and specific shots in the cutting room and they cut it precisely where
the best cut-pint would be. In the great train robbery Edwin porter used an
establishing shot to show the location which the actors where in and to set
scene. Furthermore this could also us cross cutting because the camera would
stop a scene before using an establishing shot. The film was made in 1930 back
when no one had any equipment or had no knowledge of how to edit films so all
films where kept short and basic and easy to understand over time films started
to become more and more popular and the equipment for editing started to
improve.
There is some information on early continuity editing but you could have given more analysis of Porter, including dates. Vanessa
