Call the midwife

Call the midwife- sound unit Vanessa

At the beginning of call the midwife they use a theme tune which is also called a jingle which is used in every episode this is for identity so when everyone hears that theme music then they think of call the midwife. They use diagetical sounds to make the scene more realistic and also to show what is going on behind the music also they use digateical sounds such as buses, cars, baby crying people talking all over the music which is called aural landscape and it all sounds a bit busy in the scene so, this indicates that people are in a rush to go somewhere.

After the opening scene incidental music is used throughout of the being of call the mid wife also aural landscape music is use and changed to suit the situation of the scene so for example at the beginning when everyone was rushing there was very upbeat music to show that the scene is going fast and something is going to happen next and when the baby was born the music was more subtle to show that the scene is very calm and peaceful so in different types of situations there is new background music to suit it.they use folley sounds such as the baby crying was used to make it feel more realistic to the audience.

In this scene at the beginning there was no silence this is because a lot was going on in them three minutes that they had to use each second to fit in as much in as they could just to hook in the audience.

Different types of accents are used in the beginning of the episode accents usually give us information about the characters for example if a character with a posh accent was talking then it would show us their social calls same as someone with an east London accent was speaking it would show us their social class it was also tells us in call the midwife that the couple with the received pronunciation accent would be more higher in power seeing as call the mid wife is set in the olden days. This gives us more of an idea of what sort of life style each character has purely based on their accent.

In the scene of when the lady was conceiving the baby her what looked like to be her husband was waiting outside and he looked very nervous to suit his nervousness the music became even more upbeat which indicated that he was nervous and there was tension of what is going to happen next for the viewers and the man in the show. Whilst the lady was giving birth over the dialogue of the mid wife’s talking really fast to try and calm down the lady the music in the background was still very upbeat to show thing important is happening they also use very upbeat music so the viewers know that at end of the music something interesting is going to happen which is another reason to why they used this type of music through on the scenes of the husband the lady giving birth.

There was a voice over used for the audience to understand what is going on because of the change of the scenery where it went from the baby to another scene of people going about their normal lives.

To do with all these sounds being used and the accents from the dialogue we have more of an idea of what is going on or what might happen in the episode just for listening to the first 3 minutes of call the midwife this shows how powerful and meaningful just sounds alone could be and how they can tell a story even without anyone having to see the actual scene its self.

Serial podcast and radio show

Serial podcast season 1

In  the serial podcast the lady who is speaking starts of by explaining what her podcast is going to be about whilst she is explain she then uses music which is called oral landscape. She uses very upbeat music depending on what she is saying at one point she was talking about romance and love and then she uses music over it which is very subtle and romantic music to fit in with what she is saying this is to create meaning and so that the viewers feel as if thought they are experiencing it also adding in the music makes her story sound more interesting and more enjoyable to listen to.

In the podcast there isn’t much silence but the lady does take breaks through her sentences to create tension and to make the viewers want to hear more also, taking breaks through each of her sentences or in-between makes the story sound more interesting and more relaxed rather than it be the presenter talking very fast it would sound as interesting also because there is no visual the presenter needs to try her hardest to describe to the viewers of what is going on.

By describing the scenes to us so that the viewers create an image in the viewers minds of what is going on so, that the story seems more interesting and also by connecting and image with the description in your head with the story of what is being told makes the story more easier to understand and also it lets the viewers connect more with the story and making it more imaginary.

The words that the lady is saying and the way she is putting the story together is so interesting she doesn’t give too much away at the beginning she is giving the viewers a quick over view of what happens in the story but doesn’t give too much away so that the viewers then want to find out more she builds tension with her words and also by adding in the music but when she is talking alone it makes you want to listen very carefully so that you do not miss anything out. She then adds in phone calls and interviews with other people so the viewers can have more of an idea of what is going on some of the interviews that this presenter does is over the phone and it is very clear to tell that it is over the phone because of the sound and how it sounds a bit more different to when she is doing face to face interviews. This is so that the viewers get a second opinion of the story and also to make it sound more real life because there are ordinary people who are involved in this situation and who have a story to tell as well. Whilst the interviews are going on the presenter cuts through it and talks about the interview itself so that she can give her option about it this makes you want to listen to her opinion and follow it so that you can think the same also this is sued so just in case the viewers don’t know what the interview is about the presenter clears it up and then goes back into the interview the change through the interview to the presenter talking herself is very easy to tell the difference because of the different sounds that is going on the interviews have more of a ruff sound and the presenter talking herself has more of a subtle and clear sound.

This pod cast has more of a wide range of audience because the story does involved young teenagers so it could appeal to young teenagers also and it could also appeal to older people who are interested in things and story’s to do with crime and mystery.

Compared to the radio on breakfast show the two are very different as the radio show has much more upbeat music to wake up the viewers and to make then happy and they also use aural landscape when combining very upbeat music to a man who is very upbeat and loud and does not take breaks through his sentences they use a jingle ‘’radio on breakfast show’’ this is for branding so that the viewers know wat radio show they are listening too also they start off with new music that is very popular at the time and then they go to talk about things with celebrities or just normal people they usually have phone-ins for people who have won things over the radio show this makes people want to join in so that maybe they could win something too. In this type of podcast you would of have to be tuned in from the beginning of the podcast to understand fully what is going on whereas in the radio show you could tune in at any time thought out a song or interview and still get what is going on.They also usually have interviews with other people about things that have happened recently and they have phone-ins to do that to they could also have interviewers on pointless things that the audience can’t help but listen to. The radio show is on in morning that is another reason to why the music and the presenter is very upbeat to wake people up for this radio show the audience is mainly older people or young adults for people who are dropping their children to work or who are going to work.

In the radio show they also use announcements at the beginning of what music is going to be played ‘’we have Rita ora…’ this sis o that the viewers know what is going to be played throughout the radio show.
